The Battle for Haiti
Mr. James Fagan of Hartford, Connecticut, who has served as the Principal of Bellizzi Middle School in Hartford, is sponsoring the position of the Principal of South Windsor Haiti School. This sponsorship will provide the salary of the principal and the position will be named in Honor of Mr. & Mrs. James Fagan.
The South Windsor Haiti Task Force thanks Mr. Fagan for his kind donation.
Two Haitian members of the South Windsor Haiti School Task Force will be available to meet the public at an open house on Sept. 12.
Michel Lesly Louis and Francoise Louis will be at the home of Saud and Yusra Anwar, 93 Rockledge Drive, on Sept. 12 from noon to 4 p.m.
The Louises are helping the task force secure land in Haiti that will be the site of a new elementary school. The effort comes in the wake of the powerful earthquake that rocked Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, in January, leaving more than 150,000 dead or missing and damaging or destroying many buildings. The couple will discuss the widespread devastation in their homeland and give a first-hand account of the massive and slow-moving reconstruction of Haiti since the quake.
Plans Progress for South Windsor Haiti School
By RUSSELL BLAIR
Where others see six cargo shipping containers, rusty and inadequate for daily use, Rabbi Jeff Glickman sees a chance to make a difference.
Glickman, the leader of Temple Beth Hillel, plans to turn the 20-foot by 8-foot metal boxes into the six classrooms of the proposed South Windsor Haiti School, an elementary school for the underprivileged and impoverished children of earthquake ravaged Port-au-Prince.

New taskforce seeks community support for school in Haiti
BY MARTHA MARTENEY Staff Writer
After the earthquake in Haiti, Dr. Saud Anwar of South Windsor went on a medical mission to Port-au-Prince . He saw that the children needed to get some normalcy back in their lives. There were no schools, and there was no organized structure of getting the children back to school. The infrastructure that was destroyed by the earthquake was severely lacking, so he did not feel that simply rebuilding was the answer.
“We needed to come up with a plan,” explained Anwar, “And [to] create a model that no one had done before.” The result was the formation of the South Windsor Haiti School taskforce. The goal is straightforward: to build a school and vocational center in Port-au-Prince , Haiti. The method is unique because it envisions the town of South Windsor coming together as a community . Anwar is joined by co-chair Rabbi Jeffrey Glickman of Temple Beth Hillel .
